Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer emotional as they pay tribute to ‘seriously ill’ Alan Hansen who’s now ‘on way to full recovery’

Alan Hansen was recently announced as 'seriously ill'

Gary Lineker and Match of the Day co-host Alan Shearer share a touching tribute to hospitalised Alan Hansen during Saturday night’s (June 15) live broadcast of Italy’s Euro 2024 game against Albania.

The former football centre-back, 69, was announced as “seriously ill” earlier this month. As he fought for his health in hospital, privacy had been requested on behalf of his family.

Alan has worked on BBC’s Match of the Day for over 20 years. In response to the news, Gary initially tweeted: “Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family.”

Ahead of Italy’s Euro 2024 opener against Albania on Saturday, Gary issued another emotional message to Alan live on air.

“It’s been a tough week for everyone associated with Match of the Day,” he said. “The news that Alan Hansen was seriously ill in hospital shocked us all, didn’t it Alan?”

Alan Shearer responded: “Oh absolutely. We are great friends with Al, we know his character we know he’s a fighter, we know how tough he is.”

He added: “We’re thinking of you big man and we’re with you, we’re hoping and we’re praying for you.”

Visibly emotional, Gary stated that “everyone at Match of the Day sends love and thoughts to Janet, Lucy and Adam and the grandchildren”.

He added: “To use an analogy of Alan’s favourite pasttime, golf, he might be three down with four to play, but if anyone can come back from it, it’s Alan. I’ve never known a more competitive person in my life. We’re all with you big Al.”

“I spoke to him yesterday and he sounded fabulous so I hope that’s him on the way to a full recovery,” he revealed.

“He’s definitely back because he did nothing but take the Mickey out of me!”

Get better soon, Alan!
