Football pundit Alex Scott is back on the box today (Saturday, August 24) with Football Focus, but she was recently seen discovering the secrets of her family’s past on Who Do You Think You Are?.
In terms of her own experiences, Alex has been very open, bravely sharing her mental health struggles in the hope of helping others. She also detailed them in her 2022 autobiography, How (Not) To Be Strong.
The star previously said she has “lived my whole life putting on an act”.
Alex Scott on mental health struggle
“When I retired, getting trolled, I found that I was turning to drink to try and hide everything, hide what I was feeling,” she also confessed to Woman’s Health in 2021.
“Looking at my daily life, many would wonder how I could be ‘depressed’,” she went on. “But mental illness doesn’t work like that. It’s so easy to think there are people worse off than us and we have no right to feel sorry for ourselves. But that thought process alone can be really dangerous, and lead to bigger problems.”
When I retired, getting trolled, I found that I was turning to drink to try and hide everything, hide what I was feeling.
Alex heartbreakingly admitted that she kept her struggles to herself for a long time: “I didn’t tell anyone, I didn’t tell my mum because I didn’t want her to worry or put that stress on her.”
“I was just that person [who thought] ‘I can look after myself, I can deal with stuff’ but obviously sometimes that’s the wrong way,” she added.
Thankfully, she eventually sought therapy. It’s something she has since described as “the most enlightening thing I’ve ever done in my life”.
“I love it. I will never stop,” she promised.
