EastEnders ledge Peggy Mitchell maybe pulling pints in heaven, but that hasn’t stopped actress Barbara Windsor from sticking her nose into what’s happening in Albert Square.
And apparently our Babs isn’t happy. You see, the cockney pocket rocket is livid with EastEnders’ new producer Sean O’Connor because he has decided to kill off popular characters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell.
The former Carry On star reckons the new exec has made an epic mistake by getting rid of actresses Samantha Womack and Rita Simons, who she says have given viewers great EastEnders moments for many years!
“It wasn’t the girl’s choice. It’s the new producer’s decision,” she told The Sun this week. “I’m sure he’ll be good for the show, but that is a mistake. When I heard I was shocked.”
Not as shocked as poor Sam Womack, who confessed she was heartbroken that she was being written out.
When a fan posted a video collage of the Albert Square sisters, Sam wrote: “10 years of ll Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell . My heart is breaking watching this.”
According to reports, Sam and former Girls@Play singer Rita Simons were stunned when they were told that their characters were being killed off. They had hoped that the door would be left open for them to return (no doubt, in case those panto offers dried up!)
But the show’s new axe man, who replaced former executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins back in April, had other ideas and decided to kill off the bottle blondes instead and made them shoot various versions of their death scene to boot – probably just to rub it in.
But grab a handful of tissues because Roxy and Ronnie are not the only popular characters being kicked off the show – characters Margaret Midhurst and Paul Coker, Masood Ahmed, Lee Carter and Babe Smith are also being written out in a mass clear out.
