As Gladiators returns with its toughest series yet, hosts Bradley and Barney Walsh are brimming with excitement about the show’s evolution.
However, while the father-son duo are central to the action, Barney has revealed that his dad Bradley’s long list of health conditions keeps them from stepping into the arena themselves – despite their enthusiasm.
Gladiators revival is ‘fantastic’
The new series sees the return of fan-favourite events like Atlaspheres, alongside thrilling new additions such as Unleash.
In Atlaspheres, contenders and Gladiators face off in massive metal spheres, battling to score points and outmanoeuvre one another.
Meanwhile, Unleash introduces a dramatic twist as contenders race through a smoke-filled tunnel, only to face an unknown Gladiator in a high-octane chase to the finish.
Bradley Walsh described the show’s revival as a perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation.
“The new series is just fantastic, the Gladiators mean business and they are back tougher than before!” he explained in an interview with the BBC.
“The contenders now have helmet cameras fitted…so you can literally see what they are faced with when going up against the Gladiators.”
While the identities of the new Gladiators remain under wraps, Barney promises they’re “formidable” and destined to become household names.
“They’re monsters, but the best kind of monsters!” Bradley added with a laugh.
Both hosts attribute the show’s success to its ability to bring families together.
“It’s a show that brings families together around the TV,” Barney said. “Parents who used to watch the original 90’s show, now sit and watch the new series with their kids, it’s like a full circle moment.”
Bradley and Barney Walsh want to take part in Gladiators – but can’t
When asked about their favourite events, both hosts have their preferences.
For Bradley, it’s The Edge. “It’s so dramatic,” he gushed. “In the arena it makes the hairs on your arms stand up, and it is so high up it’s both terrifying and electric to watch!”
Barney, meanwhile, leans toward the new event Unleash for its adrenaline-fuelled action.
“It’s just really exciting!” he expressed.
As much as the Walshes love being part of the Gladiators experience, Barney admitted they’ve been itching to swap presenting for competing.
“We’re dying to take part!” he joked. “But the insurers won’t let us.”
The real obstacle, though, is Bradley’s extensive list of ailments.
“That and my dad’s dodgy hip… knee… ankle… toe…and both arms,” Barney teased. “Other than that, we’re ready!”
