BBC One criticised for airing shooting scene in drama

Some viewers found it inappropriate in light of recent terror attacks

While BBC One’s Broken has been praised for its gripping storylines and fine acting from stars including Sean Bean and Anna Friel, some viewers felt that a scene in last night’s episode was inappropriate in view of the recent London terrorist attack.

In the show, priest Michael Kerrigan (Sean Bean) had to console a grieving mother whose bipolar son was shot by local police.

“The @BBC got it so wrong showing this tonight,” wrote one viewer.

“Torture for the London Bridge victims. Bad judgement, very bad.”

Another viewer wrote: “Shocked that this programme went out tonight.

“With ?’s being asked about our superb #police it’s irresponsable [sic].”

Another wrote: “Tonight’s #broken featured armed police shooting someone with mental health issues? Oh dear.”

“#broken – this program [sic] is sick – shooting the boy who couldn’t see.”

However, Others were full of praise for the drama which tackles tough subjects.

“Jimmy McGovern’s #BROKEN on @BBCOne is a tough watch, but my goodness it’s wonderfully written, acted, directed,” wrote actress Rebecca Front.

“#Broken is a bleak watch, but McGovern and Sean Bean do put some real warmth and heart into the parish priest – mostly how I remember them,” wrote Twitter user Martin Douglas.
