Bodyguard star Richard Madden asked to leave Netflix HQ after taking staff-only water

Streaming giant has global rights to Bodyguard

| Updated:

Bodyguard star Richard Madden was asked to leave Netflix headquarters after he tried to take a bottle of water meant for employees only.

The 32-year-old actor, who played David Budd in the hit BBC1 thriller, was refused the drink and security guards showed him the door.

It happened despite Netflix recently acquiring the global rights to the show, which makes Richard one of the streaming site’s biggest stars.

Speaking on US talk show KTLA Morning News about the bizarre mix-up earlier that day, he said: “I walked in and was told I was in the wrong building.

“But there was a fridge of Netflix-branded water, which I went to grab a bottle of, and he said ‘You have to go around the corner for your guys’ show’.

Richard continued: ‘I said ‘Cool, I’ll just grab a bottle of water’, but I was told no, I’m not allowed to, ‘It’s for Netflix employees only’.”

Despite explaining that he did work for Netflix because he starred in the service’s new hit show, the guards told him to leave.

According to Richard, he was told: “Sir, you have to put that water back now. You have to leave now, sir.”

The actor added: “He held the door for me and I left the building.”

Last week, Richard revealed plans to hold talks with Bodyguard writer Jed Mercurio, who also created BBC1 drama Line of Duty, about a possible second series.

He told Deadline: “I’m going to meet Jed in a couple of weeks to have a chat and see what’s in his brilliant brain.

“So I’m like, ‘What can happen next? You know, with David. Because he had a hell a couple of months there’.”

Richard’s Bodyguard character was the personal protection officer for the Home Secretary, played by Keeley Hawes.

They embarked on a dangerous affair amid a deadly plot involving corrupt public officials, underworld criminals and terrorists.
