Coronation Street has gone to some pretty dark places this year, we don’t think anyone could possibly argue with that.
There’s been the horrific grooming storyline with Bethany Platt, which saw the teen character followed into a room by three men during one grim scene.

Then we had the shock discovery that twisted builder, Pat Phelan, had kept poor Andy Carver chained up in a mouldy cellar for the best part of a year.
And just when we thought things couldn’t possibly get any darker, there was a double execution in a warehouse (Poor Andy and Vinnie Ashford) before Phelan dumped their bodies in a lake.
So when Corrie boss, Kate Oates, talks about a storyline that’s so huge and controversial it scares her – we’re really scratching our heads as to what it could possibly be.
But apparently there is something in the pipeline.
Kate has previously teased about this mega-controversial storyline in August, saying: “At the moment, there are still stories I’m passionate about telling.
“We’re doing one next year that scares me a bit but if it’s taken in the way we intend, it could do a lot of good.”
She’s expanded on that – a bit – but without giving any real details away.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, she said: “I am still scared but I think that the trepidation that I feel is useful.
“It’s one of those storylines that makes you check what you are doing and it will make people talk about it – we will seek a lot of advice and we have talked about it a lot as a team.
She added: “So it is a good thing that I feel a bit scared about it as it means that everything we do with it will be done in a very considered way and I hope that will come across.”
But what could be more controversial than a sex ring, a cellar hostage or a warehouse execution?
We’re truly baffled.
Corrie has faced a backlash from some viewers over the recent grisly scenes with telly regulator, Ofcom, receiving a large number of complaints about Phelan’s murders.

But it’s also won praise for tackling some hard-hitting issues.
Lucy Fallon walked away with the Best Actress gong at last week’s Inside Soap Awards for her portrayal of abused Bethany.
