Coronation Street’s Maureen Lipman slams ‘too smutty’ chat shows

She isn't a fan!

Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman has blasted chat shows for being too crass for her taste.

The actress, who plays the character of Evelyn Plummer on the cobbles, thinks that popular talk shows such as The Graham Norton Show are too low rent when it comes to the topics they discuss.

The 72-year-old explained that she feels the format can be “misogynistic”.

She told the Radio Times: “It forces female actors into a predatory role while the male Hollywood actor’s job is to sit in studied rictus, unable to believe such loucheness is allowed on National Television.

“Now what matters most in them are the bum, poo, willy, titty references, a sign in my view of the increasing initialisation of TV these days.”

She added: “I accept the chat-show format had to change, but the sofa is crammed with English actors telling their juiciest genitalia stories while the host sniggers in a three-piece suit.”

Giving examples of what she means, Maureen recalled the stories of some famous faces who have been on Graham Norton’s sofa.

She said: “Chocolates are pressed between Hollywood buttocks in the night by one beauty, an Oscar contender recounts placing a sponge between her legs for a sex scene and the show peaks with a ‘relief’ story of self pleasure in a tree from a gay actress in her 70s.”

It seems Maureen was referring to 45-year-old actress Kate Beckinsale’s story of putting a chocolate between a pal’s bum cheeks while they were asleep, only for them to realise it was there the next day.

The sponge reference is Olivia Colman’s description of her sex scene with Emma Stone in their new film The Favourite.

Olivia, 45, explained she used a wet sponge to prank her co-star Emma, 30, during their love scene.

Meanwhile actress Miriam Margoyles, 77, once told the bizarre tale of finding a man committing a rude act in a tree in Edinburgh.

Maureen insisted she enjoys a saucy joke or two but she simply isn’t a fan of this kind of entertainment.
