Coronation Street’s epic Pat Phelan storyline came to the most dramatic conclusion last week when the serial killer was killed by nemesis Anna Windass.
But as his alter-ego’s reign of terror was finally bought to an end, actor Connor McIntyre has revealed to Metro.co.uk that it was only right his character departed the cobbles in a body bag…
“The viewers deserve that pay off because love him or hate him, we’ve taken them on a fine year odyssey and we’ve frustrated them, entertained them and delighted them in equal measure so it had to reach a conclusion.

“It’s also important to remember that whilst he does have a bit of a Phelan fan club he is a very dark piece of work so it’s been some journey but it has to be conclusive.”
After storming into Michelle and Robert’s wedding, carrying daughter Nicola in his arms, Pat begged for someone to help after he’d shot her in the shoulder.
But almost killing his own child wasn’t that darkest moment by far.
Phelan then came face-to-face with enemy Anna, who had been released from prison that day.
The killer had taken bride Michelle hostage in the Bistro kitchen, only for him to shoot her in the stomach, before Anna made sure his killing spree went no further by grabbing a knife and stabbing Phelan in the chest.
But that wasn’t the end of Phelan’s attempts to put the frighteners on Anna.
As he lay dying, he then removed the knife that was keeping him alive, all in an attempt to frame her for murder.
Connor’s admitted that Pat knew at this point he wouldn’t live to see another day…
“We see earlier that he has made his mind up that the game is up so he gives Anna a little snigger before his eyes go and really nobody has won. The snigger is not about anything other than him winning, going out on his terms to the very end.”

The actor also revealed that Phelan knew he would always get his comeuppance for taking so many innocent lives: “He knows because he has done it, that you don’t kill somebody and not pay for it. In his narcissism and his love for control, he knows that he has traumatised them all.”
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
