Davina McCall has admitted that having kids put a strain on her relationship, saying that after the arrival of her first baby she wanted to “punish” husband, Matthew Robertson.

Speaking to Giovanna Fletcher on the Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast, Davina opened up about the impact the early days of parenthood had on her marriage.

The presenter claimed that with her first baby she tried to make sure Matthew was as tired as she was.

“With Holly I sort of wanted to punish Matthew in some way and keep him up,” she said.

“So we slept in the same bed and with the feeds I would turn the light on and change the nappy. You know – the bedside light, change nappy, do the feed. And think ‘well, I am sorry if you’re awake.'”

Davina revealed that the couple had more children they developed a different routine – with Matthew sleeping in the spare room.

“And that sounds selfish because it’s like the guy gets to go to sleep,” she said. “But actually my feeling was if one of us gets some sleep then they can make tea or whatever for the other one the next day.”

Having the bedroom to herself had an added benefit as well – Davina was able to entertain herself while doing midnight feeds.

“Also for me it was nice to turn on the telly,” she said. “I remember one night watching Happy Gilmore and doing some feeding and changing the nappy and thinking this was actually quite nice.”

The couple survived the strain of having young children – the three kids are now 16, 14, and 11 – but announced their separation at the end of last year.

Davina put out a statement in November confirming the split, after years of marriage counselling.

“I am very sad to say that Matthew and I have separated,” she said.

“Our amazing children are our number one priority, above everything else so therefore we ask for as much space and respect from the media as possible while our family goes through this difficult time.”
