EastEnders star says son’s recovery from road smash was a miracle

His son made a miraculous recovery and was able to run the marathon last weekend

A reckless driver has admitted he was racing at nearly twice the speed limit when he nearly killed EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt’s son.

Twenty-year-old Mohammad Ahmed hit 18-year-old Samuel Woodyatt while racing at 56 miles per hour last year.

The boy’s pelvis was shattered and he had to be flown to hospital by helicopter from the scene of the smash in Mile End, East London.

He had to be wheeled around in a wheelchair for two months.

Samuel was put into a coma for several days after the crash last September following agonising five hour surgery to rebuild his pelvis.

Amazingly, he bounced back so fast he was able to run with his famous dad in the London Marathon at the weekend.

Adam Woodyatt who plays Ian Beale in Eastenders said it was “a miracle”.

But in court in East London, the judges were told Samuel still suffers from a bad memory and is still recovering.

The driver, Ahmed is from Bognor Regis in West Sussex and has admitted one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Now he might face headed behind bars after magistrates decided to send him to the crown court for sentencing.

There’s no date at the moment for when that will happen and it’s not clear whether the Woodyatt’s will be there to see the outcome of the case.

Prosecuting Ahmed, Aislinn Rice said: ”The Crown say the defendant was speeding at the time, the limit on the road was 30 miles per hour.

“His speed was calculated as 56 mph. The victim walked out across the road when at that point there was sufficient distance.

“He then realised a car was speeding towards him at the junction. If the car had been travelling at 30mph there would have been no collision.

“It was prolonged speeding on the road and the safety of others was disregarded.”

Magistrate Hilary Kundu said: ‘This is a very serious matter to which you have pleaded guilty.

“This falls well beyond our sentencing powers and this court will be sending you to Snaresbrook Crown Court for sentencing.

“Can I remind you that it is a very serious offence.”
