This time, Joe Tate’s henchman Graham will be put in the spotlight during an hour-long episode next week.

For the first time, viewers will get a glimpse at the former soldier’s past.

At the moment, we know he used to be in the army, and that his wife Cheryl and their unborn child died in a drink-drive crash that he caused 10 years ago.

He now battles a dangerous drinking problem – and he flies into an alcoholic rage in the upcoming scenes.

Viewers will see Graham getting more and more drunk and wallowing in self-pity, accompanied by flashback scenes that show his dark and troubling backstory – and the real reason he hates himself so much.

Haunted by visions of his dead wife, Graham finds solace in the bottom of a bottle, which has dramatic consequences for him and those around him.

In quotes printed in Digital Spy, Andrew Scarborough reveals his character is haunted by a particular event.

He says: “He’s obviously had a lot of tragic events in his life, not just one. But this one particularly shaped him quite a bit, leaving him with a lot of guilt and remorse.

“It’s the anniversary of his wife’s death and he suffers with it every year. It won’t leave him. It’s just always there with him and that explains why he doesn’t smile much.”

He adds: “You’ll see flashbacks to the time that it happened, and in the present day, his wife is a presence. She’s the manifestation of his guilt and this is what lies underneath Graham.

“Graham could be hallucinating. It could all be in his mind, or she could be a ghost. Some of the armour comes away, so you see the man and his state of mind.”

Andrew also explains that Graham is “trying to contain the monster inside”.

During the episode on Tuesday (31st July), Graham lashes out at several Dales residents, including love rival Frank Clayton.

Later on, Joe finds Graham in a very low mood and attempts to console him, but Graham loses control once again and charges violently at him.

Spoilers even suggest that Joe is brutally attacked during the encounter, and Andrew admits Graham will be a social pariah afterwards having to make it up to the whole village.

Will Graham be able to fight his demons as well as he’s fought everyone else?
