Emmerdale fans, particularly those on #TeamCoria (that’s team Cain and Moira in case you didn’t know), were left delighted after tonight’s episode pretty much confirmed that Cain Dingle is the dad of Moira’s surprise baby.
When she went into labour during the barn fire, Moira had told Emma Barton that her son, Pete was the daddy, but when Pete decided to step up and be a dad to the newborn, Moira had to tell him the truth.
“I don’t know for sure if you’re the father,” she told a visibly shocked Pete. “Your mum, she was going to hurt me, Pete. I had to grab any lifeline that I could.
“So I told her the baby was yours. I’m sorry.”
She added: “I swear I never meant to hurt you.”
Pete replied: “No? Then why lie to my face? Watch me hold him? No prizes for guessing whose he really is.”
Moira continued: “I’m not saying he definitely isn’t yours, I just don’t know.”
An angry and emotional Pete, grieving the loss of his mother and brother, lashed out and demanded a paternity test, before tracking down Cain and telling him he’s probably the father.
“The kid isn’t mine. Turns out I was never properly in the running,” a distressed Pete told Cain and Harriet. “He is though.”
Cain’s stunned (although the thought must have crossed his mind!) and it throws his whole relationship with vicar Harriet into turmoil.
With Harriet doubting their future as a couple later this week, she goes to visit Moira, who tries to reassure her that Cain probably wouldn’t want to be involved with the baby anyway – he doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to his kids.
But when the test results come through and will it reveal that Cain really is the father?
Harriet certainly seems to think the best thing for everyone is for Cain to end his relationship with her, but Cain is adamant he and Moira are over. Will he step up and be a daddy to his boy though?
As for Pete? He takes the news hard and struggles to deal with everything that’s happened lately.
Will only remaining brother Ross be a shoulder to cry on? Probably not after Pete basically wished him dead at the end of tonight’s episode, saying he’d wished Ross had died, rather than Finn.
THAT really made viewers lose sympathy for him.
At a time when they should be pulling together, the chasms in the remaining Barton clan are heartbreakingly clear…
