Coronation Street fans call for Dev Alahan’s corner shop to be SHUT DOWN

Hashtag food poisoning

Eagle-eyed Corrie fans were quick to leap on Friday night’s episodes  which included shocking scenes involving Sarah Platt and Gary Windass in D&S Alahan’s.

The former couple briefly ran into each other in the store in an emotional scene following their split.

But while they professed their love for each other, before Sarah fled in tears, fans were more interested in the stack of pizzas piled up on a shelf.

Yes, a shelf. Not a freezer or fridge to preserve the perishable pizza ingredients like pepperoni and cheese, just a shelf.

As usual, fans flocked to Twitter to point out the massive faux pas.

“Don’t buy stuffed crust pepperoni pizzas from Dev’s corner shop on @itvcorrie. They’re stacked on a shelf and not in the chiller/freezer #foodpoisoning,” joked one viewer, while another added: “Are they New pizza’s that don’t need fridging in Dev’s, only they’re on the shelf.

And a third asked: @itvcorrie why are the pizzas on the shelf in Devs? (pizza) should be in the fridge/freezer?”

The Food Standards Agency has very clear guidelines about the storage of perishable foods, but it seems Dev isn’t too worried about his hygiene rating – or the possible fine he could be landed with for breaching guidelines.

The FSA say: “You must store raw materials and all ingredients in appropriate conditions” – i.e. not a random shelf.

It continues: “You must not keep food at temperatures that might cause a risk to health. Cold food can be kept above 8°C for up to four hours.

“You should only do this once. If any food is left after this time, you should throw it away.”

The Sun Online even report a viewer getting in touch with them – calling for Dev’s store to be shut down.

They report Piers Nunn contacting them, saying: “Dev’s shop on Coronation Street should be shut down due to food safety issues.

Stuffed Crust Pepperoni and Veggie Pizza need to be stored in a chilled environment and not on the shelf! Absolute outrageous. This is promoting unsafe food practices”

Good spot viewers. Except you’re all wrong!

It was all a trick of the cameras as you can see in this picture, that the pizzas are in fact in a chiller, along with cans of drink and what looks like dairy produce.

Phew. We knew Dev wouldn’t make such a school-boy error when it came to food hygiene and the possibly future of his business empire.

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV
