EastEnders fans heaped praise on the BBC One soap last night as Max Branning finally got his just desserts for his months of scheming and backstabbing.
Max was left with his tail between his legs as James Willmott-Brown and the rest of his motley clan double-crossed Max in front of all the people he’d double-crossed in the pub. Ooh, nice twist.

As a chuffed-to-bits Max pulled out a ring and got ready to pop the question to Fi Browning, Willmott-Brown swooped in and said his daughter would need a lobotomy to marry him.
A confused Max slowly came to the realisation that JWB had been using him all along. ‘Just business then?’ he asked, before Willmott-Brown told him it wasn’t even that.
Then Luke Browning, who had arrived at The Vic fresh from giving Ben Mitchell a brutal beating, threw Max’s contract and cheque for £350k in the fire.
A gutted Max sat slumped in a chair while the Carters and Ian Beale raged at him for setting them up and secretly selling their properties to Weyland & Co.
In the end his brother, Jack, had to save Max from what was becoming something of a lynch-mob.
Jack dragged him out of the pub, but not before Max had got a smack in the gob from Kush Kazemi after Max broke Carmel’s heart.
Back at Jack’s a despondent Max was about to burn himself with a cigar when his brother stopped him.
And the fandom were LOVING IT!
“Best night ever last night watching max’s sad PATHETIC life just get even more sad and PATHETIC..well done eastenders just make sure he stays in the gutter.”
Another added: “EastEnders just keeps getting better & better – loving the jwb/max storyline right now – looking forward to tonight’s episode!”
While a third agreed, writing: “No sympathy for Max, it’s about time he got what’s coming to him but take nothing from @mrjakewood and his acting tonight. Bring on tomorrow night. I’m really impressed by #eastenders for the first time in a long time.”
Not everyone was enjoying seeing Walford’s former premier ladies’ man sink so low however, with lots of fans confessing they actually feel sorry for Max.
One fan wrote: “Love the #EastEnders episode today, great acting and could not stop feeling sorry for Max! Such an amazing actor @mrjakewood.”
