Film legend Goldie Hawn revealed a worrying health issue during her appearance at Sunday (March 2) night’s Oscars 2025 ceremony.
The Private Benjamin star, 79, presented the Best Animated Feature gong alongside actor Andrew Garfield.
And, alongside the more controversial moments, Spider-Man star Andrew, 41, left Goldie emotional as he shared a very personal tribute to her before the award’s announcement.
And as she struggled to continue with the presentation, the Death Becomes Her actress divulged exactly why.

As the pair stepped onto the Academy Awards stage, Andrew appeared to go off-script as he offered a few warm words to his fellow presenter.
“Can I tell you something?” he asked, before continuing: “There’s someone, there’s a person who gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort. And tonight, I feel very lucky, because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart.”
Indicating he meant Goldie, whose hand he was clasping, Andrew went on: “You’ve given us movies full of joy. You’ve lifted our spirits and you’ve made us feel it all was right with the world, over and over again.”
Goldie, moved by Andrew’s mention of his late mother, choked back tears as she replied: “Thank you so much, that really touches me.”
She added: “I was so lucky to make movies, and make people laugh.”

‘I’m completely blind’
Appearing to wipe away tears, Goldie attempted to return to declare who had won the award.
But she seemed to encounter some difficulty, calling upon Andrew: “Sweetheart, can you read that? I can’t read that.”
Goldie said: “I’m completely blind. I mean, I am!”
“Cataracts,” she explained.
Taking the situation in his stride, Andrew reassured Goldie: “I got you.”

How fans reacted
Viewers expressed on X.com how moved they were by the moments between Goldie and Andrew.
Others also posted how heartened they were by Goldie’s bravery about her condition.
“Heard you mention cataracts,” one user typed. “I will be going for both mine, separately of course end of moth. Good luck and you looked tremendous at the Oscars. Take care.”

Another well-wisher wrote: “Cheers to @goldiehawn for shouting out us cataract folks #Oscars.”
And someone else added a crying emoji to their words as they posted: “Goldie Hawn saying she has cataracts #Oscars2025.”
The Oscars took place overnight in Tinseltown, with big winners and one of the year’s most popular films ‘snubbed’.
Fans were left furious after Wicked failed to pick up the Best Picture Award, with the nod instead going to Anora.
Oscar winners: Anora honoured
The film was the night’s big winner, with the leading lady Mikey Madison collecting the Best Actress trophy. It also won Best Director, Best Editing and the film won Best Original Screenplay.
The five awards made it the biggest winner on the night.
Adrien Brody’s Brutalist wins praise
Elsewhere, The Brutalist’s leading man Adrien Brody won the Best Actor gong. However, he raised eyebrows with his behaviour towards his girlfriend when he went up to collect his award.
Clearly not wanting to give his acceptance speech while chewing gum, he took it out of his mouth and threw it at his girlfriend for her to catch!
Other winners at the 2025 Oscars
Succession brothers Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong were both in contention for the Best Actor gong. They were nominated for A Real Pain and The Apprentice respectively.
Kieran won out on the night, taking to the stage and telling his other half he was happy to start trying for a baby now he’d won his Academy Award!
Despite the controversy surrounding the film, Best Supporting Actress went to Zoe Saldana for Emilia Perez.
Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl also missed out on the Best Animated Feature award. That was handed to Flow.
Wicked stars ‘snubbed’
Elsewhere, perhaps the biggest shock of the night was that Wicked’s leading stars failed to collect an award. The film also didn’t collect any of the other big awards on the night.
It did land a couple of technical nods, though. The film picked up Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
However, fans were less than impressed after the film and stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo missed out on honours.
