It looked like David Platt finally got some closure on his horrific rape ordeal in Coronation Street tonight as rapist Josh Tucker was battered and left for dead.
David’s girlfriend Shona Ramsey has been left scratching her head since finding out David has been carrying a flick-knife with him.
She called in David’s new best friend vicar Billy Mayhew and told him he’d been acting strangely.
When she found a batch of receipts in his pocket for the same place, Billy offered to trail David and find out what was going on.
Billy was stunned when he discovered David had been following a man called Ethan.
David confessed that Ethan was hanging around with Josh and he was worried that Josh was grooming Ethan in the same way he did with him.
Billy convinced David to head home before approaching Ethan himself and telling him all about Josh’s history of drugging men and raping them.
Ethan looked unconvinced but Billy’s dog collar clearly did the job as later the police dropped round to Billy’s flat to tell him that Ethan had found GHB on Josh and beaten him to within an inch of his life.
The vicar then headed round to David’s where he confessed to him and Shona what had happened.
David lost his temper with Billy, calling him a hypocrite for doing exactly what he’d told him not to do, before storming out.
While Shona and Billy worried about where David was heading, the hairdresser paid his rapist a visit in hospital.
“Mind if I sit down?” David asked the unconscious Josh before taking a pew and saying, “Not talking to me then? That’s your problem, no manners. Well, that’s not your only problem is it? You’ve got others.”
He continued, adding: “I’ve been meaning to have a word with your for some time now.
“I’ll never forgive you for what you did. I thought you were my friend.”
David then went on to compare Josh’s current state with how he must’ve been after the mechanic drugged him.
He said: “I wonder if this is how you felt when I was unconscious? You could do what you wanted to me, just like I can do what I want to you.”
David then lamented that he could switch Josh’s life support off, or unplug it and no one would be the wiser.
He told him how much he wanted to watch him die and even confessed to fantasising about it.
Then he added that he pitied him and wanted him to die but wouldn’t be the one to do it.
“I’ve got too much to loose, I’ve got a life to live,” David told Josh. “And I’m not going to throw that away because of you.”
He then left Josh alone in the hospital room before returning home to his family.
Former Corrie boss Kate Oates promised that David would get closure on his horrific ordeal before she quit the cobbles and admitted it wouldn’t be via a court case.
In an interview with the Radio Times, she revealed she didn’t want to tie up the story neatly and risk impacting on the powerful discussions that could be had.
She told the magazine: “I am not afraid of controversy. It’s more important to reflect the truth. If you tie things up with a bow, there’s a danger people take away from that: ‘It’s all right then, we don’t need to talk about this anymore, it’s done.’
“But it’s not done. There are lots of things within that story that we couldn’t show on screen. If I were going to show that story in court, I’d have been fascinated to have played the truth of it.”
Could this be the closure David has needed to put the rape firmly in the past?
Only time will tell but it certainly looks like it could be a step on the road to recovery.
