Hayfever sufferers warned to stay inside as pollen bomb hits the UK

There could be a lot of sneezing and itchy eyes over Easter

Those who suffer badly with hay fever have been warned to stay indoors as a heavy outbreak of pollen is set to sweep through the country.

People planning a picnic or barbeque over the Easter bank holiday are advised to check the weather reports, if they are sufferers, as the high pollen count is set to come in.

Around 18 million Brits could have their bank holiday tainted by sore eyes and runny noses.

The early influx comes after the warmer winter we had, where temperatures were as high as 21C in some areas of the UK.

Experts have explained that it is trees that could cause a real problem for sufferers, not just flowers or grass.

Allergy expert Dr Jean Emberlin told The Sun: “When you get warmth like that in winter, it gives the trees a real push to open up and start releasing pollen.

“We had some bad weather at the beginning of March which temporarily put a halt to it or we could have seen a very, very early birch pollen season.”

Dr Emberlin added that a patch of dry and windy weather would create the “perfect” climate for pollen to travel through the air.

Birch tree pollen may not just affect hay fever sufferers in the suburbs or countryside.

Dr Emberlin explained that birch trees are also present in a lot of urban areas, too.

Experts have also advised those with Asthma to be vigilant with the pollen outbreak.

Hay fever affects around 80 per cent of Asthma sufferers.
