Oh, Coronation Street, what are you doing to us? Our nerves are frayed after tonight’s double bill, as Pat Phelan’s day of reckoning finally played out.
The nail-biting confrontation between the serial killer and his wife Eileen, as she eventually learnt the truth of his murderous ways, resulted in Phelan being pushed to his watery grave…
Or was he?
Before the final credits rolled, viewers were already sharing their theories on how the soap baddie had actually survived being tossed into the sea by his terrified wife.

Hmmm, well, it sounds pretty unlikely that he could have lived in those waters… but many people would be happy about Phelan not being gone for good, that is for sure. And the soap’s powers that be will all be aware of that.
Corrie viewers were gripped throughout tonight’s sublime episodes, with the drama ramping up as word filtered back about the bodies of Andy and Vinny being discovered in Manchester.
Learning the truth about her husband via a voicemail from Tim while stuck on a windy lighthouse cliff top during their seaside retreat, Eileen confronted Phelan.
“What have you done?” she screamed at him, and the evil builder proceeded to explain how he had been responsible for four deaths.
“Turns out I could kill. Turns out I was pretty good at it,” he told her.
As Eileen edged towards railings and prepared to throw the keys to a boat Phelan was planning to escape to Ireland in, he warned it was likely rusty, before telling her: “If you drop those keys I will kill you, you’ll be the easiest one yet.”
And then he grabbed for them, but Eileen pushed him over… by a soap miracle, he clung on – literally – by some rope.
Phelan then begged Eileen to save him, and bargained for his life by claiming he knew where Todd is.
With that, Eileen lost it and repeatedly yelled “liar!” as she stamped on his fingers. Phelan plunged backwards into the sea…
When the police arrived soon after, she declared: “He’s gone.”
But, as yet, the coastguards are yet to find his body…
