Uproar after James Bond legend Sir Roger Moore’s grave vandalised: ‘So disrespectful’

Fans of James Bond icon Sir Roger Moore were left in an uproar after his grave was reportedly vandalised earlier this year.

The acting legend, whose career spanned seven decades, sadly died in 2017 aged 89. Roger was best known for playing James Bond – and the 13th entry in the series, Octopussy, airs today (September 1).

However, a few months ago, a fan of the actor was left fuming after discovering his grave had been vandalised.

James Bond fan said grave of Roger Moore was vandalised

Roger sadly passed away in 2017 after a battle with cancer. He was laid to rest in Cimetiere de Monaco – an exclusive cemetery in La Colle, Monaco.

But back in June, a fan visited Roger’s grave – but was “shocked and angry” to find that a part of it had been “ripped off”.

The anonymous fan posted pictures of the gravestone online, leaving other fans outraged.

Fan ‘Shocked’ over Roger Moore grave

Speaking to TMZ, he explained how he was looking for the memorial’s unique marker – a large family crest seen in the fan tweet above. But when he came across the grave, he realised it had been ripped off from the headstone.

The graveside visitor shared how he was “equal parts shocked and [expletive] someone would desecrate any grave – but especially one belonging to the James Bond legend”.

It has also been reported that the cemetery itself and local authorities didn’t know that the alleged crime took place. Both told TMZ that no one had “reported the vandalism” until then.

Fans online also shared their anger at the time. Writing on X, one person fumed: “So disrespectful! What a world.” Someone else proclaimed: “If this doesn’t shake you up, it should stir you up a bit… why would anybody vandalise Sir Roger Moore’s grave?”

Roger started playing James Bond back in 1973. He portrayed the iconic character in seven films across 12 years in the iconic franchise.

At the time of his death, his family released a statement. It read: “It was with a heavy heart that we announce our loving father Sir Roger Moore has passed away in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer. The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone.

“We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him from his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF which he considered his greatest achievement.

“The affection our father felt whenever he walked onto a stage or in front of a camera buoyed him hugely. And it kept him busy working into his 90th year, through to his last appearance in November 2016 on stage at London’s Royal Festival Hall.”

His family continued: “The capacity crowd cheered him on and off stage, shaking the very foundations of the building just a shirt distance from where he was born.

“Thank you Pops for being you. And for being so very special to so many people. Our thoughts must know turn to supporting Kristina at this difficult time. And in an accordance with our father’s wishes there will be a private funeral in Monaco.”
