Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh has opened up on about a health scare she suffered 10 years ago and encouraged women to go for their smear tests.
The 42-year-old actress had to have pre-cancerous cells removed shortly after her son Archie was stillborn in 2009.
She says she was encouraged to take the test after Big Brother star Jade Goody passed away from cervical cancer in March that same year.
Kym branded the ordeal “horrific” and wants to make sure women are being checked.
Kym told OK! magazine: “I have one every year as I was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells ten years ago.
“It was back in 2009 and it was the year I lost Archie – Archie died in the February and then Jade Goody passed away from cervical cancer in the March.”
She continued: “A few months later, I had my first smear test after losing my son and that’s when I was diagnosed. It was horrific but I went and had the cells removed.”
Kym, who plays Michelle Connor on the cobbles, urged women to get their smear tests during cervical cancer prevention week.
She told her Twitter followers last week: “It’s cervical cancer prevention week and I cannot stress enough how important it is to go get your smear test. It takes a few seconds and it may be uncomfortable and I guess to some embarrassing, but it could SAVE YOUR LIFE!! Heading for mine today. Go get yours! X.”

Kym is now looking forward to becoming a grandmother for the first time.
Her daughter, Emilie Cunliffe, is expecting her first child and Kym shared a picture of her sonogram earlier this month.

The star, who insists she’ll be called “Lolly” rather than “Grandma”, wrote: “I can’t wait to meet you my beautiful grandson!!! 😍😍💙💙 I just want a cuddle @emilieecunliffe.x @mikeyhoz.”
