Host of A Place in the Sun Laura Hamilton opened up about her autoimmune disease flare-ups that have impacted her week.
The TV presenter has been no stranger to discussing her health with fans and previously revealed she has Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). According to Kings College Hospital, ITP is an “autoimmune condition that causes a low platelet count, which can lead to an increased risk of bleeding.”
A Place in the Sun star Laura Hamilton opens up about ‘crazy week’
While filming in Greece for a new episode of A Place In The Sun on Monday (December 23), Laura took to her Instagram Story to share some snapshots of her flared-up legs. However, the 42-year-old presenter insisted that viewers won’t be able to see the bruises when the new series airs as she will be covering her legs with long dresses.
“This is ITP! Just a little flare-up this week. But you won’t see it under my dress for filming! #itp #autoimmune #itpawareness,” she wrote.
After many of her 214,000 followers reached out to the TV star, Laura detailed her “crazy week” in a video message while sympathising with those who also have the disease.
“So that’s ITP, Immune thrombocytopenic purpura. It’s a reaction from a low platelet count that I have in my blood. It’s been a very, very crazy week for me which I’ll tell you more about very soon. I’ve been really really busy and I think it’s just taken its toll,” she said.
For the caption, Laura wrote: “Also sorry to hear from those of you that have ITP too, particularly those whose children have it… I am happy to offer any advice that I can! Laura x.”
‘His sister had died from ITP’
Laura first opened up to fans about ITP back in October 2022. She revealed that her skin starts to flare up when she’s stressed.
She said: “It was really mad a year ago I was filming A Place In The Sun with a lovely couple in France – Mark and Janine – and I just stood there and I had an insect bite on my leg and I started scratching it.
“I thought, oh, I shouldn’t have done that because I’m gonna have bruises on my leg from ITP.”
Mark stopped Laura at that moment and asked her how she knew about ITP, revealing his “sister had died from ITP”. Mark insisted it was “really good how I was trying to raise awareness of it”.
Laura continued: “It’s kind of under control at the moment, I don’t have bruising quite like that on my legs, but it does happen, it does flare up, but I’m always trying to be positive about it. The disease only affects 4000 adults at one time, and is most common among young women.”
The reaction to ITP has also left Laura with bruises on her arms and bleeding gums.
