Corrie favourite Liz Dawn has died following a long battle with emphysema, it has been announced this morning.
It was reported earlier this month that the 77-year-old had been rushed to hospital.
She was admitted in Manchester, suffering from fluid on the lungs and chest pains.
Friends and family were left “fearing the worst”.
Speaking about her health recently, Liz said: “If it wasn’t for the doctors, I wouldn’t be here today.
“My health is very bad these days. I just have to get on with things.”
Coronation Street broke the sad news to its legions of followers on Twitter: “It is with the greatest sadness that we have learned our beloved Liz Dawn has passed away last night.”
Liz became a household name after joining Corrie as Vera in 1974.
By the time she left in 2008, due to ill health, she had given 34 years service to the soap and had earned the title of national treasure.
She delighted fans by making a one-off return in 2010 – to play a ghost – who appeared for one last dance with her beloved Jack, who then passed away peacefully in his favourite chair.
Bill Tarney, who played her on-screen husband, died in November, 2012.
