Loyal EastEnders fans “love it” as Sharon Mitchell references iconic character

She's long been gone from Walford, but not forgotten!

Old school EastEnders fans were given an unexpected treat this week, when Sharon Mitchell made reference to one of the soap’s first ever characters.

Those paying attention would have heard Sharon mention ‘Mary the punk’ in a conversation with step-daughter Louise.

In scenes shown on Tuesday 6 March, Louise showed off her new look after experimenting with make-up. But step-mum Sharon wasn’t keen.

She told Louise: “You don’t need to use all that make up at once.”

“This is how the girls at school wear it, I was just trying it out,” replied Louise, before Sharon compared her to “Mary the punk”.

Obviously young Louise had no idea who her step-mum was talking about. But devoted viewers took to Twitter to see who else remembered the original character.

Walford’s original wild child, Mary Smith lived in Walford from 1985 to 1988. A single mum with a chequered history which included drugs, prostitution and teenage pregnancy.

She was played by Linda Davidson, who eventually gave up acting. She now works for Jamie Oliver Enterprises.
