There’s only one episode left in the current, head-scratching second series of Marcella… and viewers are still bewildered by the identity of the confusing thriller’s killer.
The final few minutes of last night’s episode seemed to reveal another possible suspect for the horrific murder wave of vulnerable children – Jane Colletti, the mother of the teenager who had been dating Marcella’s son Edward.
Viewers were immediately set on edge as Edward seemed to recognise a gold car outside Jane’s house as he visited. Was it the same car from his distorted memories?

Sam’s mum’s car is the same from the vison Edward seen, I think #marcella

I think Samantha’s mum is involved somehow as Edward was looking at her car as though he recognised it #Marcella @annafriel @RayPanthaki

Does the gold car even belong to Samantha’s mum? We don’t see her driving it? Another red herring? #Marcella

However, Jane’s approach to welcoming house guests proved far more worrying than her choice in cars.
With Edward hanging about waiting for her daughter Samantha, Jane gave the young lad a cup of hot chocolate as the nurse told an unnerving story about her day.
“I helped deliver a baby today. A little boy,” said Jane.
“His mother had a black eye and some bruises. As soon as I saw her and her husband together I knew he was beating her.”

Calming voicing her fears, Jane continued speaking to an unseen Edward: “I thought: ‘Is he going to beat that little boy too?” You just wish for everyone to grow up safe and happy, but it’s not always the way.”
“Bad things happen and one day it all becomes too much.
“Even though you know how horrible it is to be hurt, you start hurting others. It’s a vicious circle. But it can be broken.”
As the camera’s focus pulled away from Jane, it revealed Edward collapsed on the floor, presumably drugged or poisoned by the hot chocolate.
Earlier on in the episode it had been suggested Jane was more involved in the covered-up death of Debbie Kavanagh – a friend from Jane’s wild teenage years when she hung around with older band musicians – than had been first thought.
And although Marcella deduced the child victims had been murdered to ‘protect them from evil’ and the killer was most likely female, it wasn’t until viewers heard Jane’s oddly protective words while Edward sipped his drink that the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place.
But they still don’t think Jane did it all by herself, either.
Always the one you least suspect!! Still believe there is more than one killer it can’t just be Samantha’s mum alone!!! One episode left, what’s is going to happen 😨😬😱…I can’t wait!!!#Marcella @annafriel @RayPanthaki Also there best be series 3 in the pipeline!! @ITV

If Samantha’s mum is involved, this would solve how that boy got placed behind the band’s wall as revenge for her being raped at 14 by one of them… #Marcella

After thinking about it Samantha’s mum who is now shown to be the killer could she have helped deliver the children who were abused so feels like she has a responsibility to stop the cycle of abuse to those children as she was abused herself? #Marcella @annafriel @RayPanthaki

One fan even wondered whether there had been other visual clues linking multiple murderers together by tattoos.
#Marcella so 4 symbols. 4 ladies involved. Each have a tattoo?
1. Vet
2. Carehome Dr/Manager
3. Samantha’s mum
4. Hmmm…. Vet’s gf, Becky? pic.twitter.com/JHEKcdSZdM— Carys Walker (@CarysWalker206) April 2, 2018
There must be more to the mystery, though, mustn’t there? This is Marcella after all…
Penultimate #Marcella episode gave us a shock death and a ‘killer’ reveal that was totally out of the blue. I’m guessing there’s more to this than what’s been shown. Finale will surely be epic. 7/10

Seriously loving #Marcella – this series is even better than the 1st imo. Had absolutely no bloomin’ clue Sam’s mum was involved! Excellent from all but especially @annafriel – so underrated. Can’t wait for next week!
