Max George to have open-heart surgery as scan reveals ‘block’ in his heart

'City game didn’t help much...'

The Wanted singer Max George will be in hospital over the Christmas period undergoing open-heart surgery to have a pacemaker installed. Now he’s shared on social media that doctors have discovered he has an atrioventricular block.

Last week, Max updated his Instagram followers on his health condition.

He revealed that he has an issue with the bottom part of his heart. However, he insisted that he is “very lucky” and “in the best place”.

Max’s health issues come two years after after bandmate and best friend Tom Parker died of brain cancer. Shortly afterwards, Max appeared on Good Morning Britain to thank Britain’s healthcare workers for giving Tom the care he deserved.

Max George to have open-heart surgery over Christmas

The Wanted singer Max George has shared further details about his health condition and diagnosis. He’s revealed doctors have finally worked out the cause of his heart issues.

He has a second-degree atrioventricular block. As a result, he’ll spend Christmas in hospital, having – and recovering from – open-heart surgery. Surgeons will likely install a pacemaker.

“I hope you are having a good night,” Max said in a new update to his followers last night (December 15). “Spoke to the nurse earlier and the good news is: I get to have a scan earlier than I thought.

“So that’s really really good, and it’s called a 2:1 block. That’s what we know at the moment. Going to try and find out the cause before determining how we treat it, whether a pacemaker, defibrillator, or something else.”

A second-degree ventricular block, or AV block, is a disease of the electrical conduction system of the heart. Basically, it means your heart beats more slowly, or with an abnormal rhythm. It has to do with the electrical impulses that control how the heart beats.

Max’s heart rate is abnormally slow

In an update on Friday, Max said he had an “issue with the bottom part of my heart”.

“It is called a block,” he said.

He went on: “My heart rate is really, really low, which they are monitoring 24/7. Everyone has been amazing but the waiting bit is tough, do you know what I mean?”

“But yeah, it is just one of those things unfortunately and whatever I get I have just got to get on with it really and we are hoping pacemaker. Pacemaker is good.”

In his latest update, per MailOnline, Max showed that his sense of humour is still fighting fit.

“So that’s where here I am at,” he said. “Feeling okay tonight. City game didn’t help much.”

He’s an ardent supporter of Manchester City; they just lost to United, 2-1.
