Dr Michael Mosley coroner records ‘accidental heatstroke’ as cause of death

The TV doctor sadly died back in June

| Updated:

Following the death of Dr Michael Mosley back in June, a coroner has officially recorded his cause of death today (December 20).

Michael, who had appearances on This Morning, went missing on the Greek island of Symi on on June 5. His wife, Clare Bailey, raised the alarm that evening after he failed to come home six hours after a hike.

However, on June 9, it was confirmed by Symi mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas and police that Michael’s body had been found.

It was later revealed that Michael was shown in chilling CCTV footage – where he may have ‘fell on a rocky hillside’.

Now, six months later, a coroner has confirmed what Michael’s cause of death was and shared an insight into his tragic final moments.

Coroner records Michael Mosley’s cause of death

The initial post-mortem examination showed that there was no suspicious circumstances surrounding Dr Mosley’s death, but a definite cause of death was yet to be established at the time.

Now, senior coroner for Buckinghamshire, Crispin Butler, said Dr Mosley’s death was “indeterminate” and “unascertainable”.

Butler added that it “was most likely attributable either to heatstroke (accidental) or non-identified pathological cause”.

Reports state that Butler said Dr Mosley’s death was not found to be as a result of homicide, suicide or an accident related to his injuries.

Mr Butler reportedly wrote in his findings: “Michael Mosley collapsed and died on the 5th of June 2024 in a rocky area near Agia Marina Beach, Symi, Dodecanese, Greece. There had been high temperatures during this time. Michael’s death was not found to be due to homicide, suicide or an accident related to injuries.

“Michael’s death was most likely attributable either to heatstroke (accidental) or a non-identified pathological cause. There was nothing of note in toxicology. No medical cause of death could be ascertained, meaning Michael’s death may have been due to a medical event or as a result of a non-traumatic accident.”

Michael Mosley’s final moments

The coroner also documented how Michael had intentionally left his mobile phone at home – to prevent the device from getting wet – due to having plans to get a ferry ride home later that day.

He later decided to walk home.

Butler described that Michael “had his rucksack, one litre of water and a biscuit, and had a hat and umbrella” with him and appeared to be cheerful before setting off on the hike.

The coroner also recorded that Michael had appeared to be energetic before embarking on the journey, despite the blazing heat.

Dr Michael Mosley initial post mortem results

According to Greek media at the time of Dr Mosley’s disappearance, the star may have taken a tragic final rest just a few yards away from the safety of a restaurant. The autopsy was completed just days after his body was discovered, with initial findings indicating the doctor’s time of death was around 4pm on the day he went missing.

Footage of Dr Mosley’s final moments saw the 67-year-old medic was walking at a slow pace through the mountain trying to reach the beach of Agia Marina.

A report by the coroner in Greece showed that the doctor appeared to have rested his hand on a terrace before collapsing – possibly because he was feeling unwell in the day’s 37C heat.

Michael Mosley’s body found

After days of searching, Michael’s body was sadly found on June 9. The body was found close to a cave complex beside Agia Marina on Symi, around 10 metres from the sea. He did not appear to show any signs of injury.

The doctor reportedly made his way down a slope before disappearing behind a wall.

Michael Mosley wife statement

At the time, Michael’s wife Clare broke her silence on her husband’s tragic death. She said in a statement: “I don’t know quite where to begin with this. It’s devastating to have lost Michael. My wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together.

“I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days. My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world. It’s clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you.”

She continued: “We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb. Then he took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search.

“Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special.”

“We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him. Some of these people on the island, who hadn’t even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked. We’re also very grateful to the press who have dealt with us with great respect.

“I feel so lucky to have our children and my amazing friends. Most of all, I feel so lucky to have had this life with Michael. Thank you all.”
