Miranda Hart reveals ‘physical and emotional pain’ of ‘awful’ health condition following ‘collapse’

'No one understands'

Comedian Miranda Hart has opened up about her “awful” battle with Lyme disease.

The 51-year-old actress previously explained she had spent three decades dealing with a mystery health condition. She was later forced to take time off from work before finally being diagnosed with Lyme disease.

According to the NHS, Lyme disease is a “bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. It’s usually easier to treat if it’s diagnosed early.”

Miranda’s health also took another turn as she was also diagnosed with ME, often referred to as chronic fatigue syndrome, which is a long-term condition that can affect different parts of the body.

In the latest newsletter, Miranda shared an extract from her book, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You, to open up about her struggles and how she felt when doctors failed to find a diagnosis from her symptoms.

She wrote: “As I continued to study the scientists on this matter, another phrase stood out. They would say: ”There’s nothing wrong here right now.’ What?!

“Oh, it seemed not only implausible, but downright mean. Frankly, I would have punched someone in the face had they coolly said this to me when I was collapsed with exhaustion. I would have shouted, um, excuse me, but EVERYTHING is wrong.”

Miranda continued: “I can’t get out of bed. I’m alone. No one understands. My dreams and hopes for my life are fading away. Nothing is right, right now. It’s wrong. And that’s why it’s also blooming awful. I’m all full of wrong, so, and I mean this with no disrespect at all, go away, thank you to you!”

As she continued to express her emotions, Miranda admitted she was “welling up thinking of the myriad stories of people hit with ghastly events, but who heroically keep taking the next breath”.

Every time Miranda “wished her symptoms to be different”, she would protest “being bed or housebound”, which added “fuel to an already stressful situation”.

She admitted she was “frightening myself, like I was constantly watching a bad newsreel”.

‘I feel toxic and poisoned’

Desperately seeking help from doctors, Miranda would tell her doctor she felt “toxic and poisoned”. She remembered them initially telling her she had TATT (Tired All The Time) and admitted they didn’t know what to do with her.

After 33 years of battling a mysterious illness, Miranda was finally told she had been fighting bacterial infection Lyme disease. The doctor told her about the diagnosis in lockdown on a Zoom call. Miranda believed she contracted it when she was 14 after battling flu symptoms.

Following the call, she recalled sitting there while “still and aghast”. She felt “many emotions”, but “immediately felt a deep well of sadness and disappointment” because she had “KNOWN there was something wrong” for more than 30 years.
