Morrisons bans Christmas music to offer ‘calmer’ shopping experience

It seems most customers prefer to shop in blissful silence

Morrisons promised customers a more chilled-out shopping experience on ‘Super Saturday’ as it made the decision to switch off music for a few hours.

The supermarket banned tunes of any kind, including all the festive favourites, on Saturday morning to give shoppers a bit of peace and quiet as they picked up last-minute bits before Christmas Day.

Lasting from 9am to 12pm today (December 22), the ban included checkout beeps and spanned all 494 Morrisons stores.

In the same vein as everyone’s favourite shopping day, Black Friday, the last Saturday before Christmas has been branded ‘Super Saturday’ as it is notoriously one of the busiest days of the year to hit the aisles.

The nationwide trolley dash will see Brits splash out £2.38m every minute on festive treats, which could include Morrisons’ massive three-course Christmas dinner pasties.

According to Mail Online, the director of marketing at VoucherCodes.co.uk, Jimmy New, said: “Super Saturday will be a big shopping day for both retailers and consumers alike as millions flock to stores looking to snap up last-minute gifts and other essentials before Christmas Day.

“It’ll certainly be one of the busiest shopping days on the high street, so if you do brave the shops expect crowds.”

On the 25th, savvy shoppers are expected to spend a whopping £1bn, with many cashing in on sales from the comfort of their homes.

Morrisons’ music-free morning seemed to have shoppers divided.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “Doesn’t sound that great of an idea as most cashier rely on the ‘beep’ at the checkout to confirm an it been scanned, with the ‘beep’ turned off, it’s just going to take longer to get customers thru the tills.”

But another praised the decision, tweeting: “A relief to go shopping without canned Christmas music. @Morrisons St Albans.”

Morrisons customer director Anna Lane said: “Some customers love listening to Mariah Carey, Paul McCartney and Wham as they do their Christmas shop.

“Other customers have told us they’d like the option of a calmer morning without music, so that they can focus on buying everything they need for Christmas.”

A survey carried out by the company found that 92% of customers said they would enjoy shopping more if there was no music.
