Mrs Brown’s Boys star: “I almost killed Margaret Thatcher!”

Brendan O'Carroll admits PM food blunder

As the star of Mrs Brown’s Boys, Brendan O’Carroll is renowned for stumbling from one mishap to another.

But the TV funnyman has revealed that none of those on-screen shenanigans compare to a shocking faux-pas that he once made in real life.

The time when he fed Margaret Thatcher salt instead of sugar!

Brendan had not yet made the big time and was working as a waiter, when he was called upon to serve at a party at Dublin Castle.

The star guest? None other than The Iron Lady herself.

“I was working the top table,” he told The Graham Norton Show. “We were rushing to serve everyone before the event was on the 1pm news.

“With just a few minutes to go, Mrs Thatcher asked for some fresh strawberries.”

“I served her and she then asked for some caster sugar. I rushed to get it and, with only seconds to spare, I poured some on the fruit.”

“While the news was going out, I watched as she put a spoonful in her mouth, and at that moment realised the bag I was holding was a bag of salt.”

If this were an episode of Mrs Brown’s Boys, you’d expect to hear some audience laughter as Agnes pulled a mischievous face.

But this was reality, and the politician who once said “the lady’s not for turning” was about to get the shock of her life.

“Her face said it all!” continued Carroll. “Only she and I knew about it, and it was never mentioned.”
