While much of the country is worrying about Brexit, our favourite online forum Mumsnet is concerning itself with Bolognese.
Just what is the correct way to eat the bastardised pasta dish affectionately known as Spag Bol? A question that’s doubtless kept us all awake at one point…
One contributor to the life-affirming website has branded her young daughter ‘odd’ for the way she consumes the meaty carb creation.
Apparently the little girl likes to mix the sauce in with the pasta… then put cheese on it.
In case you were wondering, it’s this mixing habit that’s causing the mum consternation.
And it’s not just Spag Bol she’s ‘messing’ with…
The mum went on to confess: “Yesterday at Nursery she mixed her peas in with her mash, had the sausages cut up, mixed them into the gravy then poured the gravy and sausage mix over the mash (Nursery Manager told me as she finds it funny).
Gravy over mash!
Other mums were, as you’ll likely be imagining, totally baffled by the revelation under the Am I Being Unreasonable? thread, as they see mixing food stuffs as, y’know, pretty normal.
One commenter explained pretty bluntly: “Italians mix the sauce in properly… how else are you meant to eat it if not mixed in?”
Someone agreed: “Er, that’s how you should do it…”
Another criticised: “I think you’re the odd one if you find what your daughter does abnormal. Who eats the sauce separate from the pasta?”
Other Mumsnetters felt the mum pretty fortunate, as their kids possess the rather more taxing habit of not allowing their different bits of food to touch each other.
One admitted: “Our own kids won’t allow any item of food to touch another. Beans go in a separate bowl etc.
“I don’t think your daughter is odd, but she does probably stand out a bit at nursery where so many of that age group like to eat everything individually and without ‘contamination’.
Another agreed, explaining: “Nah, one of mine is odd because she eats it all separately! Veg, then carbs, then meat – even with a stir-fry!”
