Nigella Lawson defends ‘rude’ tweet

The conversation got spicy!

Nigella Lawson was forced to defend a comment she made on Twitter today after some of her followers interpreted it in a very rude way.

The TV chef made the unfortunate remark as she replied to a fan who messaged her regarding her use of spices in her cooking.

They asked: “Hi @Nigella_Lawson. My daughter, having studied your recipe books intently, is convinced you are a mad fan of cumin seeds and that they permeate your cooking. Is that correct?”

Nigella, 58, replied: “I certainly love cumin.”

Her tweet quickly gained hundreds of comments and retweets and nearly 2,000 likes, as many took her remark the wrong way.

“And there we have it The Queen of the Double Entendre,” one wrote.

“I nearly choked on my cup of tea when I read it at first,” said a second, while a third on harder stuff agreed saying: “Just spat me gin out!”

Other shocked commenters said “good gracious!” and “Nigella!”

Another called her “cheeky!” while a further Twitter user told her “you naughty girl!”

But the mother-of-two insisted her comment was entirely innocent.

“No double entendre intended in the slightest. What’s wrong with you all?” she wrote.

She retweeted this comment as her original tweet continued to gain momentum, saying: “Attention all sniggerers.”

She then added: “It’s just so dispiriting” referring to all who assumed she was being rude.

Nigella has often been accused of using innuendo on her cookery shows.

Some of her remarks while sharing her recipes have included, “I think it will be more pleasurable to do so by hand”, “If you would prefer something oozy and sticky to take up to bed with you, well, that’s fine by me,” and “my empty vessels are ready to be loaded”.

In an appearance on Australian talk show The Project earlier this year, she became confused when it was suggested her remarks where intentionally rude.

“I often don’t get it, I need you to explain it to me,” she said.

“I have this way of people projecting things on me!” she added of why she has become known as a “queen of innuendo” against her wishes.
