Rachael Bland’s widower reveals they were trying for a baby when she was diagnosed with cancer

It was heartbreaking timing

The widower of BBC radio host Rachael Bland has revealed that they were trying for a baby at the time of her cancer diagnosis.

BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Racheal sadly lost her battle with the illness last September, aged just 40.

Her husband Steve has spoken on their plans being dashed and how Racheal regretted not being able to give their son Freddie, four, a brother or sister.

He revealed: “We were trying for a second baby when Rachael was diagnosed.”

Rachael wrote her memoirs during her illness and spoke of her upset at not having more children.

In her book, For Freddie: A Mother’s Final Gift to Her Son, she wrote: “I would have loved to have had three children altogether, as I always think there is safety in numbers.

“And I’m so sorry, Fred, that I wasn’t able to give you a sibling.”

The radio broadcaster was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in November 2016 and then began a podcast called You, me and the Big C with cancer sufferers Lauren Mahon and Deborah James. The podcast has kept going since her death.

Steve, a former 5 Live producer, has since been working on the release of Rachael’s book, For Freddie.
