The cause of death of Robert De Niro’s grandson appears to have been confirmed by his grieving mother.
Drena De Niro, who revealed her son had died suddenly earlier this week (July 3), has now posted a comment about Leandro De Niro Rodriguez’s cause of death on Instagram.
Leo, as he was affectionally known, was aged just 19 when he died.
His father, artist Carlos Mare, shared an all-black screen shot signalling his grief following his death. Hollywood actor Robert has also broken his silence, revealing he’s “deeply distressed”. The whole family were also seen at a funeral parlour this week, with Drena confirming they had “said goodbye” to Leandro.

Leandro’s mother Drena paid tribute to her son in an Instagram post earlier this week. Alongside a picture of him on the red carpet, she said: “My beautiful sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly.
Someone sold him fentanyl-laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him.
“You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life. I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you.” She then added: “I don’t know how to live without you but I’ll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama.”
The post then concluded: “You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you. I’m so sorry my baby, I’m so sorry @carlosmare. Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my darling boy.”
Robert De Niro breaks silence
In a statement later that same day, the actor said: “I’m deeply distressed by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo. We’re greatly appreciative of the condolences from everyone.”
He then added: “We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo.”
His comments came after it was reported that Leandro was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at his Wall Street apartment. As a result, a statement issued by police said that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Leandro’s cause of death
His cause of death hasn’t been officially been confirmed by the coroner. However, his heartbroken mother has made an upsetting claim about how he died.
Replying to a comment on social media after someone asked what had happened, she alleged: “Someone sold him fentanyl-laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him.”
Hitting out, she went on to share: “So for all these people still [bleep]ing around selling and buying this [bleep], my son is gone forever.”
Leandro was an aspiring actor who had a small part in A Star Is Born alongside Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper.

Leandro’s death was met with an outpouring of grief. In fact, many of Drena’s friends were in total shock at the news, urging her to tell them it “wasn’t true”.
One family friend said: “Drena may GOD keep you in his arms.” Another added: “My dear friend. What can I say??? I AM heartbroken!” A third then commented: “Drena, I’m so deeply sorry. Sending you an enormous amount of love, prayers and strength. May God be with you and all who love your darling boy.”
The tragic news came almost a month after actor Robert, 79, welcomed his seventh child.
