Royal family’s official Twitter account feared ‘hacked’ after bizarre messages

There was a slight mix-up

The royal family’s official Twitter account left fans wondering if it had been “hacked” after it posted a string of unusual questions.

On Wednesday night, the page – which has 3.86 million followers – posted a string of questions about redundant alphabet letters, toilet-related math teasers and funghi.

The first question shared by the Twitter account was: “By what physiological peculiarities do Fungi differ from other plants?”

Another tweet read: “A cistern is fitted with three pipes, one of which will fill it in 48 minutes, the other in an hour, and the third in half an hour. How long will it take to fill the cistern when all three pipes are open together?”

A third said: “How many redundant letters are there in the English Alphabet? What would be the ideal of a perfect alphabet, and how far does the English Alphabet fall short of that ideal?”

The tweets left some fans baffled, with many asking if the account had been “hacked”.

One person said: “I think the account is hacked,” while another wrote: “Did the @RoyalFamily get hacked or are they really trying to encourage math??? #RoyalFamily.”

A third tweeted: “Has this account been hacked?”

However, things were soon cleared up as some people pointed out the account explained they were asking a string of questions from the 1869 exam sat by pioneering women, who were the first to join the University of London.

The account had first tweeted: “In 1869 nine pioneering women sat the first examination at @UoLondon. Here are some of the questions they were asked…” before asking the three questions.

After realising the account wasn’t hacked, one fan tweeted: “This makes so much more sense now.”

Another wrote: “Ha! This whole time I thought they had been hacked,” while a third said: “Oh!!!! That makes a bit more sense!!!!”

The questions were shared in honour of Princess Anne hosting an event at the university last night.
