A primary school has stopped giving pupils written homework, because of a concern it could cause stress.
Between now and the end of the academic year, all children at Littletown Primary Academy – bar Year Six – will not have to do any written homework.
In lieu, they will be expected to spend some time reading.
The decision was made based on research and consultation with staff, parents and the pupils themselves, explained Head, David Perkins.
He informed parents that research showed weekly Maths and English homework had little impact on development, caused stress within the family, and was not always valued by staff.
Conversely, 20 minutes of reading each evening has a positive effect.
Literacy subject leader Cathy Binmore said: “Reading is the foundation that underpins all other learning.
“Promoting a love of this will set our children up for a life of adventure and intrigue and will enable them to continue learning throughout their lives.
Mr Perkins added: “Reading for 20 minutes a day can make a massive difference to a child’s education.”
