Wham! singer Shirlie Kemp found labour ‘not as bad as a period’

Back in a 2023 interview for The Times, Shirlie discussed her experience of living with the medical condition endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition that affects more than 1.5 million women in the UK. It’s a chronic disease that occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. These externally growing cells lead to inflammation and intense pain.

After struggling without a diagnosis for years, Shirlie revealed that giving birth to her first child with husband Martin Kemp – daughter Harley Moon – was a breeze compared to what she’d been experiencing.

She told the news outlet: “A private female doctor gave my symptoms a name. When I went into labour I thought, this is not as bad as a period.”

Told to ‘get over’ her endometriosis symptoms

The 62-year-old star felt great relief at finally having a diagnosis for the condition that had left her “bedridden” with “horrendous pain” from periods since the age of 16. However, prior to her diagnosis, Shirley had to suffer at the hands of the medical service.

The singer disclosed: “A male doctor said: ‘What a load of nonsense. She’ll get over it,’ and gave me tablets that made me vomit.”

Along with this apathetic comment, Shirlie was told that endometriosis could affect her fertility. She said: “My husband wasn’t ready to have a baby. He was a rock star. When the doctor told me that endometriosis can affect your fertility, I said: ‘Martin, I’ve got to have a baby. I have a problem with my fertility.'”
