More controversy for the soap

Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has spoken out about the ITV soap’s current run of grim storylines, branding them “dark” and “too complicated”.

Sue, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, told the Daily Star newspaper that she’d love a break.

She said: “It’s all getting very dark. It’s just too complicated at the moment. I’m so knackered. I’d love a break. I want to travel to China and Japan.”

It doesn’t look like Sue, who’s starred in the show for almost 25 years, will be getting that break any time soon.

Her character is married to current cobbles super-villain Pat Phelan and it was revealed yesterday that it would be months before we see the evil builder get his comeuppance.

Phelan – played by Connor McIntyre – is responsible for three deaths on the Street, along with framing Anna Windass for GBH which saw her sent to prison for five years.

All of these crimes have gone unnoticed by unsuspecting Eileen, who got caught in the cross-fire of his feud with Anna, earning her a wallop round the head with a bolt cutter.

Coronation Street has recently faced a backlash from some fans over its increasingly grim storylines.

TV watchdog OFCOM received 390 complaints over a double murder episode back in October.

It involved Phelan shooting his hostage Andy Carver, after forcing him to shoot Vinny Ashford.

Fan have also threatened to boycott the soap after it was revealed that David Platt would be involved in a male rape storyline.

Audiences don’t seem to be put off by the drama however, with Coronation Street being the most watched show on New Year’s Day with 6.7 million viewers.

And Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany Platt, took home an NTA award last week for her performance in the controversial grooming plot.
