Strictly 2024 star Wynne Evans has been making people smile for years – but behind closed doors he has struggled with mental health issues.
The Welsh singer is back on screens tonight (September 28) for another episode of the glitzy BBC One series. Wynne, and pro partner Katya Jones, will be taking to the dance floor yet again to show off their best moves.
However, Wynne – who shot to fame as the Go Compare advert tenor – has been open about his mental health over the years.
Strictly star Wynne Evans on mental health battle
In an interview from 2023, Wynne candidly shared how despite being in a “good place” in his life at the time, “something tiny can knock you off”.
He told WalesOnline: “I’m doing okay at the moment, I’ve just come from a long weekend of therapy that I like to do now and again.”
He went on to share how he has a weekend of therapy to ensure his “mental health is in the same place as my physical health”.
Strictly star Wynne added: “I think I’ve got to a stage with it where it’s not the major part of my life that it used to be.”
Wynne says ‘it sometimes bites him on the bum’
Reflecting on his battle, Wynne shared: “It used to be everything would revolve around how I was feeling. And how I was and now it’s just part of my life that I know how to deal with. Of course, it comes up to bite you on the bum sometimes. And you don’t quite know how the day is going to pan out and something tiny can knock you off. But I think I am getting into a good place. I think I’m getting into a good rhythm.”
Wynne’s heartbreaking suicide attempt
Singer Wynne also previously bravely shared how he contemplated taking his own life after his marriage came to an end.
Carmarthen-born Wynne married Tanwen Evans in 1999. They share two children named Ismay and Taliesin. However, Wynne and Tanwen’s marriage ended in 2016.
Reported by WalesOnline in 2023, Wynne recalled: “I was doing a daily radio show where the feel of it is upbeat and keeping people in a good mood and cheering up the nation.”
“The strapline of my show is, ‘cheering Wales up by one o’clock’. But I was going through the worst depression, clinical depression. I would think about [suicide], I would try and action it. I couldn’t see a way out; I couldn’t see a way of ever being happy again.”
Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturday (September 28) at 6:15pm on BBC One.
