Former world champion sprinter Tyson Gay’s 15-year-old daughter has been killed in a shooting.
Police in Lexington, in the US state of Kentucky have said that Trinity Gay was hit during an exchange of fire.
She was hit in the neck during the shout out between two vehicles in a car park.
Local media reported that she died later in hospital.
Tyson Gay confirmed her death to local TV station Lex 18.
He said: “She didn’t make it. I’m so confused. She was just here last week for fall break.
“It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened.”
Tyson is the US 100m record holder and the joint second-fastest runner of all time behind Usain Bolt.
In a tweet, the US track and field athletics team said their “”thoughts and prayers” are with Tyson, “as they mourn the tragic & senseless loss of his daughter, Trinity”.
Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletics Association, Julian Tackett, tweeted: “A life of such potential cut so tragically short”.
Trinity was an athlete at the high school.
A murder investigation has been launched in to the shooting.
The incident happened at 4am local time (8am GMT) outside the Cook Out restaurant in Lexington.
Tyson Gay had been part of the US 100m relay team at the Rio Olympics.
There has been controversy surrounding his selection as he had tested for a banned substance during 2013 and had been banned from competing for a year.
