Amy Winehouse scored a huge hit with her cover of The Zutons’ Valerie in 2006.
Now the identity of the woman who inspired the Scouse indie band to write the original version of the song has been revealed.

Valerie Star said during an interview with Vice that she was the inspiration behind the hit song.
The American celeb make-up artist said that she was dating Zutons’ frontman Dave McCabe when he wrote the song.
“I remember when he told me about the song,” she said.
“It was like, ‘I kind of wrote a song about you. And they picked it up as a single.’
“And he wouldn’t tell me any details. He was really super shy about it. And I was thinking to myself, oh dear god Valerie, what does this song sound like?”

The song describes how Dave and Valerie conducted a long-distance relationship after she was banned from entering the UK following a string of driving offences.
They first met in a bar in Florida, when she bought him a drink after seeing the band play.
They then met in different cities.
“I’d fly out to see him. It was great. We had so much fun together,” she added.

Dave and Valerie kept the relationship going but after nine months Dave told her that the song would be released as a single.
Amy teamed up with super-producer Mark Ronson to release a cover version in 2006, and it reached number two in the chart.
Tragically, Amy died in 2011.
