The Voice has announced its ratings from last night

Will Olly Murs and co be pleased?

Many people spent the first Saturday night of the year in watching telly, so The Voice UK picked a smart time to debut the new series.

And with some interesting new changes to the coaching panel, it seems like this series has the potential to be one of the best yet.

Olly Murs marked his debut appearance as a show judge by getting into a tiff with Jennifer Hudson – that Jen comfortably won!

After Olly, Jennifer and Tom Jones all buzzed for the first contestant, Olly set out his reasons for being the best coach for singer Jake, who has a young son.

Olly said: “I’ve been on this journey before. I was 26, 25 – the same age you are when I started out.”

Jennifer then one-upped the Troublemaker singer comfortably, saying: “I won an Oscar at 25. After doing a show like this at 22. AND I have a son.”

Unsurprisingly, Jake ended up choosing Jennifer over Olly!

However the tension between the judges was only a good thing for ratings.

According to the show’s official press Twitter account, The Voice was comfortably the most watched show on TV last night.

The account said: “#TheVoiceUK was the most watched show on TV last night by some way, launching with 5.6 million viewers and a 28 per cent audience share. It peaked with 6.1 million viewers. #ratings.”

Olly was pretty happy with the news, as he tweeted his own message in reply saying: “Woop woop THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO WATCHED IT!! Legends.”

And apparently the numbers were even higher than the 5.2 million that tuned in to see Rak-Su win the X Factor in December.

So it’s all looking pretty good for The Voice! Looks like Olly’s proving to be a lucky charm.

We’ll be tuning in next time, for sure!
