Threat to life warning issued as severe snow and ice hits UK

The big freeze has begun

Temperatures are set to plummet to -4C as 10cm of snow is predicted to fall across Britain on Monday night.

The dramatic weather has caused the Met Office to issue a threat to life warning as rain, sleet, hail and snow cause disruption.

The blizzard-like conditions have seen yellow warnings put in place for both today and tomorrow (Tuesday January 22).

The current cold weather alert status is at amber, which, according to the Met Office, means “there is a 90% probability of severe cold weather, icy conditions and mostly hill snow between 0900 on Monday 21 Jan and 0900 on Friday 25 Jan in parts of England.

“This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust’s emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.”

Met Office Meterologist Alex Deakin said: “Over the next few days we’ve got sleet, snow, hail and frost in the forecast and some ice, particularly tonight with the potential for things to get very slippery on the roads tomorrow morning. ”

He added we would be having “rain turning increasingly to snow initially over the higher routes, but moving down to lower ground”.

The snow begins in Scotland and will gradually start moving west across the country.

Temperatures in towns and cities are hovering around freezing, with some falling below, and the road surfaces will also be below freezing.

As well as the Met Office putting yellow weather warnings in place and saying “it’s not going to be very pleasant to drive through” and “ice is a risk”, Public Health England have also issued advice to those who are vulnerable.

Speaking to The Sun Dr Emer O’Connell of PHE said: “Experience shows us that every winter thousands of people are seriously affected and even die from illnesses linked to the cold.

“Protecting yourself from the cold may seem like common sense but many people do not manage to keep themselves warm.

“If you know someone at risk, someone over 65, anyone with dementia or a heart and lung condition, or a young child, check up on them and see if there’s anything you can do to help.”

He also advised heating our homes to at last 18C and “planning our days” around the weather forecast.
