Tributes pour in as Charlie Gard’s parents announce their baby boy’s death

The world has been touched by the family's plight

Baby Charlie Gard’s mum and dad have revealed that he has died.

His mother Connie Yates to Mail Online: “Our beautiful little boy has gone, we are so proud of you, Charlie.”

Charlie was eleven months old.

He had been suffering from the rare condition mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDDS).

The tot had been the subject of a long legal battle between his parents and Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he was being treated.

Doctors wanted Charlie to die with dignity, while his mum and dad wanted to try potentially life-saving treatment available in America.

Mr Gard and Ms Yates fought legal battles at the High Court, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, but judges ruled efforts to continue his life should end.

Connie and partner Chris Gard abandoned their fight on Monday, describing it “the most painful of decisions”.

They then faced a further battle – the right to have Charlie die at home.

But the decision on that also went against them and, on Thursday, their young son was taken to a hospice.

Charlie’s story touched the world and people are flooding social media with tributes.
