UK weather: Mini heatwave will send temperatures soaring this weekend

But heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for later in the week

The Met Office has predicted a mini-heatwave for Britain over the next couple of days – but it won’t last forever.

According to The Sun, a plume of hot air sweeping in from the Azores in the Atlantic will see temperatures rocket to 27C, more than 10C above the average, this weekend.

But the summery spell is only expected to last for three days, with forecasters indicating thunderstorms will prevail in the middle of the week.

Meteorologist Nicola Maxey told the tabloid that sun worshippers will have until Tuesday to make the most of the warmer conditions.

She is reported to have said: “We have high pressure building this weekend and although there will be the risk of the odd shower in central and northern parts of the country there will be plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures as air comes up from the Azores.

“We expect the good weather to hold out this weekend and through Monday.”

Ms Maxey also suggested showers could take hold for the rest of July.

The forecaster noted the weather could become “more unsettled” as the high pressure breaks down, leading to more rain showers.

She added: “As we go through the rest of the month there are indications that low pressure will be in control of the weather.”

According to the BBC, Monday could see periods of cloud forming, with rain coming in from the west on Tuesday.

It is thought rain will continue to spread across the west of the country by Wednesday.

There could also be a few scattered showers in the central region overnight tonight – but most areas areas are otherwise expected to enjoy clear spells.
