Wayne Rooney breaks silence following drink-driving arrest

It could mean bad news for his marriage, too

After being arrested for drink driving earlier this month on September 1, Wayne Rooney pleaded guilty to the charges in court this morning.

The Everton player was sentenced to a two-year driving ban, a 12-month community order and 100 hours of unpaid charity work by Stockport Magistrates Court.

However, it seems there is yet another consequence, as wife Coleen, who is pregnant with the couple’s fourth child, was nowhere to be seen during the court proceedings.

After the judge passed sentence, Wayne broke his silence by releasing a statement. It read: “Following today’s court hearing I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.

“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC.

“Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

“Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service.”

The court case follows revelations Wayne was driving the VW Beetle car of Laura Simpson, a 29-year-old office worker, who was with him at the time, travelling to her house.

Laura has since said the rendezvous was far from innocent, telling the MailOnline the pair had shared “a kiss and cuddle” and would probably have slept together if the arrest hadn’t happened.

However, she later denied it on This Morning, saying: “I’ve not kissed and I’ve not cuddled him and if I did there would have been a lot more coverage because we were in a bar.”

This isn’t the first time Wayne has put his marriage to the test. Back in 2004, the footballer admitted to having sex with prostitutes, after he was caught on camera at a brothel 10 times.

In 2009, he was later linked to prostitutes Jenny Thompson and Helen Wood, who told the press about the affairs.

So it seems as if these most recent revelations may be the final straw for Coleen, who has been pictured numerous times without her £250,00 wedding ring since the arrest.

She has also been hounded by the press since the incident, motivating her to ask them to “have respect and stop following me” in an angry Twitter post.

The family troubles come shortly after Wayne retired from the England football squad. At the time, supportive Coleen took to Instagram to celebrate her husband, posting a photo of the couple with the caption: “Congratulations on an amazing England career!! We have loved supporting you, We love you and are so proud of you!!!”

At the weekend, Wayne stepped back out for Everton, taking on his former teammates Manchester United.

If ever there was a time he’d want the support of his family behind him, it would surely have been then.

But there was no sign of wife Coleen, or their three young sons at Old Trafford – unusual, as she so often is at matches to cheer on her footballer man.

Wayne was not wearing his wedding band either, leading some to speculate that there are still tensions in the marriage, following his drink-drive arrest earlier this month.

Of course, there could also be the entirely reasonable explanation that he doesn’t like to wear it while he plays…

But now following on from her absence from court, is their marriage still under threat?
