We’ve heard of knickers being thrown on stage but the band Westlife were “disgusted” after receiving one fan’s sick gift.
After 20 years together it would be expected to have been sent a lot of weird and wonderful presents but Nicky Byrne said to this day he is traumatised by one such gift he opened – and it wasn’t a card from Brian McFadden.
Talking to the Daily Mirror ahead of their Croke Park gig, he said the band had once received a box of USED tampons.
Gross.
The weird sender threw the bag into the van they were travelling in outside their hotel in Argentina.
“People used to chuck cuddly toys into the van with little notes attached to them and sometimes bras and knickers and everything else you can imagine,” Nicky explained.
“But this time I opened the bag and I saw a box of Tampax.
“But the strange thing was, I distinctively remember that the box didn’t look brand new, it looked a bit creased like they’d sat on it or stood on it, so we were afraid to touch it. We opened it and there were used tampons in the box.”
That is a whole other level of depraved.
The 40-year-old also recalled them taking delivery of a turnip after Mark said in an interview that his toes were like turnips, and they were also sent weighing scales.
Bizarre.
Meanwhile, Kian Egan, 39, said he had some creepy moments in the band.
The 39-year-old said: “There were a few incidents where a fan hid in Shane or Mark’s room and popped out after about three hours of them sitting there and watching TV.
“There’s been some creepy stuff in the early years, it’s not like that nowadays.”
The band, which also stars Shane Filan and Mark Feehily, played to a crowd of 85,000 adoring fans in Dublin last night and Mark revealed the gender of his baby.
Let’s hope this time there were no nasty surprises to greet them with!
