Saara Aalto proposed to her girlfriend on Twitter on Wednesday, as gay marriage was legalised in her home country of Finland.
The 29-year-old singer, who came runner-up to Matt Terry on the last series of The X Factor, initially got engaged to partner Meri Sopanen last August.
But she decided to mark the change in Finland’s law by making her engagement official, and popping the question to Meri on social media.
“Same sex marriage is legal in Finland today!!! Would you marry me @MeriSopanen?” she wrote.
Her proposal comes after Saara told Star magazine last year she was hoping to walk down the aisle in 2018, and is already thinking of venues for her big day.
“Our date will hopefully be in 2018,” she said. “I’d like to get married somewhere warm.
“In Finland and the UK you can’t predict the weather. We want it to be sunny. Something small and intimate because my work is so public. That would be good for me, but my partner wants to have a big wedding.”
Sharon Osbourne is also expected to be one of the guests, after Saara said she would love to invite her former X Factor mentor to celebrate her nuptials.
Despite missing out on the X Factor crown to Matt Terry, Saara was still snapped up by Simon Cowell’s Syco record label for a five-album deal.
As well as currently being kept busy with The X Factor live tour, Saara is working hard on her first record, and has had some input from one of her biggest idols.
“Sia has sent a song for me to record which is amazing,” she smiled to Newcastle’s Chronicle newspaper. “I really love her.
“Her songs are the best pop music around at the moment; the music and melodies are insane.
“She is one of those people I admire because she has her own style. I would love to be as big as her!”
