Kate Middleton’s uncle has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife in the street in the early hours of Friday morning.

Gary Goldsmith, who’s 52, was pulled in after a cab driver claimed he witnessed the millionaire businessman hit his wife Julie-Ann after a row.

According to Daniel Shepherd, Julie-Ann, 47, was knocked unconscious after she fell and hit her head on the pavement, close to the couple’s central London home.

The police and an ambulance arrived and Julie-Ann was taken to hospital.

Goldsmith, who is the younger brother of Kate’s mum Carole, was arrested at the scene and police later confirmed he had been charged and is due in court on October 31.

Mr Shepherd said the couple started to argue as he drove them home to their posh London home. And when they got out of his cab their row got worse.

“He was screaming and swearing at her and she slapped him round the face and his glasses fell off. It kicked off as they tried to unlock the door,” he told The Sun.

“He then turned and hit her in the face with a left hook. She fell and cracked her head on the pavement.”

Mr Shepherd added that when Goldsmith hit his wife, he jumped out of his cab and shouted: “You can’t do that!” and called 999. Paramedics treated Julie-Ann, while Goldsmith was taken away in handcuffs.

The Met Police said in a statement: “Gary Goldsmith, 52, was charged on Friday October 13 with assault by beating. He has been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on October 31.”

Goldsmith has spoken in the past about how proud he is of his royal niece, saying: “She is this confident, clever, caring girl who has taken her responsibilities in marriage and job incredibly seriously.”
