King Charles made a return to public facing duties this week following his cancer diagnosis.
The monarch, 75, visited the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre on Tuesday (April 30) alongside his wife, Queen Camilla. It’s the King’s first public engagement since he shared his cancer diagnosis in February.
During the visit, the King gave an update on his treatment as he met patients going through chemotherapy.
King Charles makes first public engagement since cancer diagnosis
King Charles met with some patients today who were also receiving treatment for cancer. He told one of them: “I’m alright, thank you,” when asked about how he is getting on with his treatment.
Royal fans were delighted to see the King out and about, and gushed over how well he looked.
One person said on X: “King Charles looks really well!”
Another wrote: “You look really well King Charles.”
Someone else added: “It’s great to see King Charles looking so happy and well.”
Meanwhile, according to reports, the King made a sweet nod to his grandkids with his attire. Charles wore a pale pink tie which featured little dinosaurs on it. It’s claimed the tie was a gift from one of his grandchildren.
Royal expert Russell Myers said on Lorraine this week: “If you look closely at his tie, he had a T-Rex tie on and there’s a few people who have been saying that this was a gift from Prince Louis who famously loves dinosaurs.”
Elsewhere, a body language expert weighed in on the King’s appearance.
Speaking on behalf of Betfair Live Casino, Darren Stanton said the King appeared “in control” and “held his head high” during the engagement.
The expert said: “King Charles looked at ease during his return and it’s clear he is feeling good about himself. He looked as though he was happy to be back in action, he was in good spirits and seemed very confident in himself.
“He held his head high with his shoulders back, which tells us he was feeling strong and ready to put himself out there.”
Darren added: “His smiles were genuine, and it’s clear he was happy to be out and about meeting people.”
Meanwhile, Darren said Charles’ body language was “consistent” the whole through the visit.
He also had “strong, engaged eye contact” with wife Camilla, as well as the public. During the engagement, the King looked “very self-assured and assertive” in his return, Darren said.
Speaking about Camilla, Darren added: “Camilla’s posture suggested she was also feeling confident and happy to be supporting Charles. She mirrored a lot of his gestures, telling us they’re emotionally on the same page.
“She looked content and happy to be there. Camilla displayed great levels of engagement and eye contact with the public, showing how comfortable she is to be taking on her duties.”
King’s health
In February, Charles shared his cancer diagnosis. He didn’t reveal which cancer he had, however, he explained he would be receiving treatment.
A statement from the palace said: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.
“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”
His daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales, is also receiving treatment for cancer.
